The historic building was constructed from 1844 to 1847 to a design by an architect named only Rosenbaum, and the station opened on October 13, 1847. It was first the terminus of the Kraków–Upper Silesia Railway. The article names no client or style, and mentions brick only for the original trainshed arch and the northern wall.
The station was modernized and enlarged in stages from 1869 to 1894, and the trainshed archway nearly doubled in size in 1871. In the 1930s the northern wall and trainshed were demolished and replaced by individual platform roofs.
The Galeria Krakowska mall opened beside it in 2006, and a new underground ticket hall opened in February 2014. PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe owns the station, which has 10 platforms and served 23.4 million passengers in 2023.
