The hotel was erected in 1985, under Kim Il Sung, to showcase the strength of the state. It replaced an older hotel of the same name elsewhere. The article names no architect or client, and does not describe a style, saying only that the entryway and lobby are extravagant. Materials are not given.

It is a twin-towered building, 469 feet (143 m) tall, with the two towers joined by a bridge. The article counts 43 stories, though a revolving restaurant is on the 45th floor and a bar on the 44th. A 30-foot (9 m) wide jade dragon's mouth marks the entryway, and the lobby has a mosaic of cultural symbols in precious metals and gemstones.

It has 500 rooms, two cinemas and a basement casino. A fire on June 11, 2015 badly damaged the bridge between the towers. The article names no owner.
