Konstanz Minster was the proto-cathedral of the Roman Catholic diocese of Konstanz, which was dissolved in 1821. A Marian church is first mentioned in Konstanz in 615. Bishop Konrad ordered St Maurice's Rotunda built in 940. After the cathedral collapsed in 1052, Bishop Rumold oversaw its reconstruction.

The building has Romanesque origins and was remodeled in the Gothic style between 1418 and 1525 by unnamed master craftsmen. The south tower was completed in 1378. Brick vaulting replaced the painted Romanesque wooden ceiling in 1637, and a restoration from 1844 to 1860 raised a tower in neo-Gothic style.

The Council of Constance met here from 1414 to 1418, and Martin V was enthroned in 1417. Pope Pius XII raised the church to a minor basilica in 1955.
