Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer built the original theater in 1891 and 1892 for a private society, and it opened on September 24, 1892 as the Theater Unter den Linden. It became the Metropol-Theater in 1898 and the Staatliches Operettentheater in 1934. The article describes no materials or style.

Allied bombing damaged the auditorium on May 7, 1944, and bombs on March 9, 1945 destroyed the facade, entrance hall and ceiling murals. Walter Felsenstein's company reopened it as the Komische Oper on December 23, 1947. The architects' collective Kunz Nierade completely rebuilt it in 1965 and 1966, with a new exterior, and it reopened on December 4, 1966.

It seats 1,270 today. It stands on Behrenstraße, near Unter den Linden. A renovation began in August 2023 and moved productions to other venues. The article does not state the owner.
