A castle stood at Koluvere in the 13th century, and the article does not name its builder. The high square tower, probably from the early 13th century, is one of the oldest castle towers in Estonia. A large round cannon tower was added in the 16th century. The castle sits on an artificial island in a dammed part of the Liivi river.
The bishop of Saare-Lääne acquired it in 1439 and used it as a main residence. The von Löwen family owned it from 1646 to 1771, when it became an aristocratic residence. Interiors were redecorated in the rococo style around 1770, and in the neo-Gothic style in the 19th century.
Duchess Augusta of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel was sent to the estate in exile in 1786 and died there. Fires damaged the castle in 1840, 1905 and 1963.
