A church and convent were founded on the site in the 1280s. Gustav Vasa had them torn down in 1527. The current church was built from 1577 to 1590 under King Johan III by Henrik van Huwen and Willem Boy, master builders and architects from the Netherlands. The article names no client, style or materials.

The tower is 381 feet (116 m) tall and was built during restoration work in the 1880s. The church has a 35-bell carillon cast by Bergholtz Bellfoundry in 1965. The graveyard was started in the 17th century.

It is a Lutheran parish church of the Church of Sweden, in the Klara area of lower Norrmalm. Since 1989 the Swedish Evangelical Mission has been responsible for its activities. The article names no owner.
