Otto Wagner, aged 63 when work began, designed the church as part of the Steinhof Psychiatric Hospital. The infobox gives groundbreaking in 1903, while the text says construction ran from 1904 to 1907. It opened on October 8, 1907, with Archduke Franz Ferdinand present, at a cost of 575,000 krone. The style is Art Nouveau. The facade is Carrara marble in about 3,000 plates, and the dome has a gilded exterior over a copper base patinated before installation.

Koloman Moser made the mosaics and stained glass, Othmar Schimkowitz the angel sculptures, and Richard Luksch the statues on the outer towers. The church seats 800, and the floor slopes about 10 inches (26 cm) from entrance to altar.

A restoration began in June 2000, and it reopened on October 1, 2006. It serves the hospital as a Roman Catholic oratory.
