The article places the first fort here in the 10th century. Between 1250 and 1264 Danylo of Halych rebuilt it. Construction of the current stone fortress began in the late 14th century, under rulers including Alexander the Good and Stephen the Great.
The walls are 16 to 20 feet (5 to 6 m) wide and 130 feet (40 m) tall, with three towers. The courtyard was raised by 33 feet (10 m). The Ottomans carried out a reconstruction from 1712 to 1718, and the Battle of Khotyn in 1621 ended with a treaty signed on October 8, 1621.
Russia later controlled the fortress, and its military status ended in 1856. The State Historical and Architectural Reserve was created in 2000. The article gives no architectural style, ticket or UNESCO information.
