César Pelli designed the tower, which the Richard E. Jacobs Group developed with the bank Society Corporation as the original headquarters client. Pelli first designed it for a Minneapolis site, as Norwest Center, then redesigned it for Cleveland after a late site change. Construction began on October 17, 1988, Turner Construction finished it in 1991, and it opened in January 1992. The article gives no style or materials.
It has 57 stories and rises 947 feet (289 m) architecturally, or 888 feet (271 m) to the roof. It was renamed Key Tower after Society merged with KeyCorp. In 2005 four illuminated logos were installed at the base of the crowning pyramid.
It was the tallest building between New York City and Chicago until 2007. The Millennia Companies bought it in 2017 for 267.5 million dollars.
