Work on Katarina Church began in 1656, during the reign of Charles X Gustav, and the original building was completed in 1695. The article names Jean de la Vallée as the architect but marks that claim as needing a citation. The church is named after Princess Catherine, mother of the king.

A major fire destroyed it completely in 1723, and it was rebuilt with a larger, octagonal tower. The new church was consecrated in 1724. The article describes its style as Baroque.

A second fire on May 17, 1990, left almost nothing but the outer walls. The rebuilt church reopened in 1995 with a new organ. It is a parish church of the Church of Sweden, and its cemetery holds notable burials, including Anna Lindh.
