Lars Sonck designed the church in National Romanticism with Art Nouveau influences. The foundation stone was laid on July 13, 1908, and Bishop Herman Råbergh inaugurated it on September 1, 1912. The article names no client. The load-bearing walls are red brick, clad in Finnish granite, giving a massive gray body. It is a hall church with a transept and seats 1,100.
The tower is 213 feet (65 m) high, and the cross is 308 feet (94 m) above sea level. During the Second World War an air surveillance station operated in the tower, and until the 1970s it served as a land-surveying trig point. A columbarium under the church, finished in 1991, holds around 2,500 urns.
It is an active Lutheran church of the Kallio parish, with concerts of organ music. The bells play Sibelius's chorale at noon and 6 p.m.
