I. M. Pei & Partners and Ziegler Cooper Architects designed the tower for Texas Commerce Bancshares, with Hines Interests as developer, CBM Engineers as structural engineer and Turner Construction as contractor. Construction started in 1978, and completion is given as 1982 in the infobox and 1981 in the text.
It is 1,002 feet (305.4 m) tall with 75 floors and about 2.2 million square feet (208,000 m²), and it is described as the tallest five-sided building in the world. The infobox gives the style as modernist. The lobby has a five-story glass wall on a stainless steel space frame spanning the 85-foot (26 m) entrance.
It was the tallest building in Texas from 1981 until Waterline Austin topped out in 2025. It connects to the Houston Downtown Tunnel System and overlooks United Energy Plaza, which has a Joan Miró sculpture. The article does not say whether the observatory at 879 feet (268 m) is open to visitors.
