Skidmore, Owings & Merrill designed the Jin Mao Tower, with Adrian Smith listed as architect. Construction began in 1994, the tower was dedicated on August 28, 1998, and it was fully operational in 1999. The estimated cost was $530 million. It rises 1,380 feet (420.5 m) with 88 floors.

The proportions are built around the number 8, associated with prosperity in Chinese culture, and the floors are divided into 16 segments. The stepped profile draws on the tiered pagoda. The infobox lists the style as Neo-Futurism, while the text describes a postmodern form.

An octagonal concrete core is surrounded by eight composite supercolumns and eight steel columns, linked by outrigger trusses. The Grand Hyatt Shanghai fills floors 53 to 87 with 555 rooms, around a barrel-vaulted atrium. The 88th-floor Skywalk covers 16,400 square feet (1,520 m²). It was Shanghai's tallest building from 1998 to 2007.
