Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates designed the tower in association with Wong & Ouyang, with Arup as structural engineer and Sun Hung Kai Properties as developer. Construction ran from 2002 to 2010. The height is 1,588 feet (484 m), including 20 feet (6 m) of roof parapets. The original proposal was 1,883 feet (574 m), but the height was reduced because of regulations limiting buildings to the height of the surrounding mountains.
The tower has 108 stories above ground, and the top floor is numbered 118 because some floor numbers were skipped. The Ritz-Carlton hotel occupies floors 102 to 118, with a swimming pool on the 118th floor at 1,538 feet (468.8 m). The Sky100 observation deck is on level 100 at 1,289 feet (393 m).
Its light show set a Guinness record as the largest light and sound show on a single building, using 538,000 square feet (50,000 m²) across two facades.
