The article says Husayn is said to have been buried here in 680, and it gives 684 for the first shrine, with a dome and two gates. 'Adud al-Dawla of the Buyids built the main sanctuary, with a dome over the tomb, in about 977 to 982, and it forms the core of the present shrine. The article names no architects.

Later work includes the Jalayirid dome and walls of 1365, a Safavid sarcophagus of 1514 and a dome regilded by 1796 to 1797. Fath-Ali Shah restored the shrine after a Wahhabi raid of 1801 or 1802 and replated the dome with gold in 1817.

The gilded dome is 89 feet (27 m) high. The shrine area is listed as 194 by 246 feet (59 by 75 m), with ten gates. Artillery damaged it in the 1991 uprising, and repairs were completed in 1994. The article gives two minarets, formerly three, and its dates conflict in places.
