The East Indian Railway Company opened the original station on August 15, 1854, from plans George Turnbull submitted in 1851. Halsey Ricardo designed the new station building, which was proposed in 1901 and opened to the public on December 1, 1905, with work complete by 1911. The article states no style or materials.

A new terminal complex was finished in 1992, and four platforms were added in 2009. The article counts 22 operational platforms, though its history adds up to 23. Platform 8 is the longest at 961 meters. The Howrah metro station opened on March 15, 2024.

The station serves about 600 trains and over a million passengers a day, and it is the divisional headquarters of Eastern Railway. The article calls it the oldest surviving railway complex in India, which carries a citation-needed tag.
