Hotel Ukraine in Kyiv was designed under Stalin and Khrushchev as Hotel Moskva. Design work began around 1948, and construction began in 1954. A. Dobrovolsky became head of the project team in 1949. The hotel opened in 1961, about seven years after construction began. It was renamed Hotel Ukraine in 2001.
The original design was based largely on Moscow's Seven Sisters Stalinist skyscrapers, with a central tower, a spire and a colonnaded entrance. Under Khrushchev's campaign against decorative extras, the design dropped the colonnade for a glazed lobby, removed most sculptures and cut the top five floors.
The hotel has 21 floors and 371 rooms. It served as a vantage point for journalists during the Euromaidan protests, and it was privatized at auction in September 2024.
