Édouard-Jean Niermans designed the hotel, including its pink dome, for Henri Negresco, a former casino director who named it after himself. The infobox gives an opening in 1913, while the text says 1912. The article says Gustave Eiffel never worked on the hotel, despite a popular belief. The infobox calls the style Neorenaissance.

It has five floors and 141 rooms, with 119 guest rooms and 22 suites. The Royal Lounge has a Baccarat chandelier of 16,309 crystals, which the text says Czar Nicholas II commissioned but never received. The hotel became a hospital in the First World War and was seized by creditors afterward. The Augier family bought it in 1957.

After the 2016 Nice truck attack the main hall was used to triage wounded civilians. It was listed as a national historic building in 2003.
