Sabena, the Belgian airline, built the hotel in 1973. The article names no architect, style or materials. It has 112 rooms, three restaurants, a bar, a café, three conference rooms, a spa, a swimming pool and tennis courts.
During the 1994 Rwandan genocide, 1,268 people took refuge in the building. Sabena Hotels sold it to MIKCOR Hotel Holding for 3.2 million dollars in 2005, and management passed to Kempinski in 2014. On April 1, 2016 it left the Kempinski chain and returned to its original name. The film Hotel Rwanda is set there, though the article says the hotel does not appear in it.
MIKCOR Hotel Holding owns 89 percent, the Rwanda Development Bank 8.5 percent, and the Rwandan government 2.5 percent. It operates as a four-star hotel.
