The Dandolo family built the Palazzo Dandolo at the end of the fourteenth century, and the courtyard arches are in Venetian Gothic style. In the seventeenth century the Mocenigo and Bernardo families owned it, and in 1629 Monteverdi's music accompanied a performance there at a wedding. In the sixteenth century the building was divided into three sections for family members.
Giuseppe Dal Niel, known as Danieli, rented the first floor in 1822 and bought the whole building in 1824, converting it into a hotel. It was modernized in 1895 with lifts and central heating, and the Casa Nuova joined it in 1906. The Danielino, with a marble facade, was added in 1946 to 1948 by Virgilio Vallot.
Notable guests included Goethe, Wagner, Dickens and Byron. George Sand and Alfred de Musset stayed in Room 10. It has 204 rooms and suites.
