Fisher, Lake & Traver designed the 12-story hotel, financed by a group including Louis B. Mayer, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and Sid Grauman. It cost 2.5 million dollars. The article says it was built in 1926 and opened on May 15, 1927. It has 300 rooms, including 63 suites, and the interior is Spanish Colonial Revival.
In the 1950s an owner demolished the archways, covered the painted ceilings and painted the hotel seafoam green. Radisson restored the lobby's coffered ceiling around 1985 to 1987 from the original blueprints. David Hockney painted the Tropicana Pool mural in 1987.
It is a contributing property in a National Register district and Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No. 545. Goodwin Gaw and David Chang own it.
