The Hofburg was built in the 13th century, by the last of the Babenbergers or by Ottokar II of Bohemia, and it has been a documented seat of government since 1279. Habsburg rulers lived there from 1438 to 1583 and from 1612 to 1806, and the emperors of Austria held it until 1918. The infobox lists the style as Neo-Baroque.

The Swiss Wing is the oldest part and holds the Imperial Treasury and the 15th-century Gothic Burgkapelle. Filiberto Lucchese designed the Leopoldine Wing in the 1660s, and Giovanni Pietro Tencala rebuilt it after the siege of 1683. Ferdinand Kirschner built the Michaelertrakt from 1889 to 1893, to a plan by Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach.

The Neue Burg, led by Gottfried Semper and later Karl von Hasenauer, was completed in 1913. Since 1946 the Hofburg has been the Austrian president's official residence, and it houses the Spanish Riding School.
