The castle stands on a dolomite rock in Carinthia that is 564 feet (172 m) high, while the infobox's 664 m is the castle's elevation above sea level. An 860 deed first mentions the rock, and the infobox dates the castle to about 860.

George Khevenhüller built an armory and 14 gates between 1570 and 1586. A path about 2,030 feet (620 m) long runs through the gates to the castle. The infobox credits the Osterwitz dynasty as builder, while the body says the Sponheim held the fief and then the Osterwitz ministeriales.

The article presents the claim that the castle was never conquered as local legend. It is open from Easter to the end of October, or April to October according to the infobox. The article names no architect and gives no style.
