Mōri Terumoto, one of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Council of Five Elders, built the castle. The infobox gives 1592 to 1599, while the text says 1589 to 1599. It is a flatland castle with three concentric moats and the Ōta River on its west side. The original keep was mostly pine wood with stone and plaster walls, and it was designated a National Treasure in 1931.
The keep and attached buildings were destroyed in the atomic bombing of August 6, 1945. Evidence found in 2010 suggests the blast destroyed only the lower pillars and the rest then collapsed. The present five-story keep, mostly reinforced concrete, was completed in 1958 and stands 87 feet (26.6 m) above a 41-foot (12.4 m) stone base.
A gate and three turrets were rebuilt in wood in 1994. It is now a history museum, and the article gives no ticket details.
