Stadtholder William III and Mary II, joint monarchs of England, built Het Loo from 1684 to 1686. Jacob Roman and Johan van Swieten were the architects, and the infobox also lists Daniel Marot. Claude Desgots designed the garden, which follows the Baroque formula of André Le Nôtre but is more conservative. The article calls the style symmetrical Dutch Baroque, with brickwork, and notes that the body text calls it a pleasure house rather than a formal palace.
The floor area is 36,042 square meters (387,950 sq ft). The building was renovated from 1976 to 1982, and the garden was restored from 1970 for the tercentenary of 1984. A 2016 competition chose KAAN Architecten to renovate and extend it.
The Dutch state owns it. It has been a museum since 1984, and it is a rijksmonument.
