The current Hampden is the third ground of that name. Henry Erskine Gordon agreed in November 1899 to sell 12 acres, and the stadium opened on October 31, 1903. James Miller designed the twin grandstands on the south side, and Archibald Leitch designed the terracing banks.

Capacity was cut to 81,000 in 1977 under safety regulations. A 12 million pound all-seater conversion reopened the ground on March 23, 1994, and the final renovation, costing 59 million pounds, began in November 1997 and reopened for the 1999 Scottish Cup Final. Jim Clydesdale is listed as architect for that work.

The bowl is split into North, East, South and West stands. The South Stand is the only two-tier stand. Capacity is 51,866 for football and 44,000 for athletics. The Scottish Football Museum opened inside the stadium in 2001. The article gives the record attendance as 149,547 in the infobox but 149,415 in the text.
