The first opera house was built in 1678 by Girolamo Sartorio as a public house founded by Hamburg citizens, not a court theater. Carl Ludwig Wimmel rebuilt it as the Stadt-Theater in 1826 and 1827, replacing an aging wooden structure. Air raids on August 2, 1943 destroyed the auditorium.
Gerhard Weber designed the current building, rebuilt from 1953 to 1955 and opened on October 15, 1955 with Mozart's Die Zauberflöte. The article names no client, materials or style for it. The infobox gives a capacity of 1,690, while the 1827 theater is described as seating 2,800.
A renovation ran from 2002 to 2005. It stands at Große Theaterstraße 25, about 50 meters from Gänsemarkt station. The article does not name the owner.
