Halberstadt Cathedral, the Church of St Stephen and St Sixtus, was built between 1236 and 1491, replacing an older Romanesque church. The article calls the style Gothic and clearly inspired by the French Gothic cathedrals. The bishopric dates to 804, though the article marks the claim that Charlemagne established it as needing a citation.
The cathedral keeps much of its medieval decoration and stained glass. Its treasury holds over 600 art objects dating from the fifth to the eighteenth century, including a unique textile collection. Many items are of Byzantine origin, brought by Bishop Konrad von Krosigk after the Fourth Crusade's sack of Constantinople in 1205.
An organ was installed in 1361 and is believed to be the first with a modern chromatic keyboard. The bishop joined the Reformation in 1591, and the Evangelical Church in Central Germany now uses the cathedral.
