Zaha Hadid's double pebble design won an international competition in 2002. Coop Himmelb(l)au and Rem Koolhaas also submitted detailed designs. Groundbreaking was in January 2005, and the building was inaugurated on May 9, 2010. The article describes the concept as two rocks shaped by the Pearl River.

The style is Deconstructivism. A freestanding concrete auditorium sits inside an exposed steel frame, clad in granite and glass. The floor area is about 71,000 square meters (764,000 sq ft), and the Opera Hall seats 1,804. The cost was 1.38 billion yuan, about 200 million US dollars.

The article calls it the largest performing arts center in southern China. It names no builder or client, and it describes the building as a public municipal opera house.
