Bo Jonsson Grip built a fortress here in the 1370s. From 1498 to 1526 the estate was a Carthusian monastery. Gustav I then demolished the monastic buildings and the old castle and built a fortified castle with a wall, mainly from 1537 to 1545. Only the facade of one wall survives from the medieval fortress. The infobox names Henrik von Cöllen as architect, but the text does not mention him. The infobox gives completion as 1709.
The castle has circular corner towers around an inner courtyard. Queen Hedvig Eleonora rebuilt and expanded it from 1654 to 1715. A theater was later added in one tower. Fredrik Lilljekvist led a restoration from 1889 to 1894 that removed many 17th and 18th century changes and added a third floor.
It is a museum of paintings and houses part of the National Portrait Gallery.
