Sultan Mehmed I Çelebi commissioned the mosque, and the vizier Hacı İvaz Pasha supervised construction, which began in 1412. An inscription records completion in December 1419 or January 1420, while the infobox gives 1424, the year decoration finished. The Green Tomb followed in May 1421.
The inverted T-plan building is a two-story cube with a southern extension and a central dome lit by a lantern, above an octagonal white marble fountain. Marble panels overlay hewn sandstone, and the domes, once tiled, are now lead. The tilework mixes black-line, monochrome, mosaic and relief techniques.
Léon Parvillée led restoration from 1863, after the 1855 earthquake. A renovation from 2010 to 2012 reopened it on May 11, 2012. It has been part of a UNESCO site since 2014.
