The Grand Mosque of West Sumatra in Padang was designed by Rizal Muslimin, whose design won a 2007 competition of 323 entries from around the world. The first stone was laid on December 21, 2007. Saudi Arabian funding in 2009 was redirected to earthquake relief, and the first prayers were held on February 7, 2014.

The roof is a modern take on the traditional roofs of Minangkabau houses, and its shape also recalls the cloth that four Quraysh clan leaders held to lift the Black Stone in Mecca. The roof frame uses steel pipes supported by four curved concrete columns. The building has three floors, with the main prayer hall on the second.

The complex covers about 434,000 square feet (40,345 square meters) and holds about 20,000 people. It is the largest mosque in West Sumatra and the second largest on Sumatra.
