Ludwig Fontana designed the hotel, built from 1873 to 1875, and it opened on February 9, 1875, or January 28 on the old Russian calendar. The article names no client and no original style. Fyodor Lidval remodeled the interiors from 1907 to 1914 in Art Nouveau, with additions by Leon Benois including a stained glass window and ceiling in a dining room. The interiors are described as marble and gilt, with sweeping staircases.

It was known as the Hotel Evropeiskaya in the Soviet period. It closed on January 5, 1989 for a full restoration by a Soviet and Swedish joint venture and reopened on December 21, 1991. Orient-Express Hotels bought it for 85 million dollars in 2005.

It stands on Nevsky Prospect. Belmond ceased operating it in 2023, and the article does not state its current status.
