A Gothic castle was founded at Grabštejn in the 13th century, and the article does not name its builder. Crown Chancellor Georg Mehl von Strelitz bought it in 1562. He rebuilt it in the Renaissance style between 1566 and 1586. The St. Barbara chapel has 16th-century Renaissance frescoes, with interlaced figural, animal and heraldic ornament on its ceiling and walls.
Later changes added late Baroque and late Neoclassical elements. Christian of Clam-Gallas built the New Castle around 1818. A fire in 1843 damaged the upper floors of the Old Castle.
The Clam-Gallas family owned the castle from 1704 until its confiscation in 1945. The Ministry of Defence took it over in 1953. It reopened in 1993, and the state owns it. It has been a national cultural monument since 2008.
