August Krüger designed the Gothenburg Synagogue, which was completed in 1855. It stands at Östra Larmgatan 12, near Drottningtorget, and was classified as a listed building in 1999. The article describes a Romanesque Revival brick building with four domes and 300 seats.

The congregation is affiliated with Conservative Judaism and follows the Nusach Ashkenaz rite. It remains an active synagogue.

In December 2017 the synagogue was firebombed, and three people were arrested. The prosecutor said that about 10 to 15 people may have attacked in concert. Mayor Ann-Sofie Hermansson condemned the attack as antisemitic, and two cabinet ministers visited the synagogue in support. The article notes that between 25 and 30 percent of the congregation's membership fees go toward security measures.
