A castle existed by 1372, when Robert II granted Glamis to Sir John Lyon, and it was rebuilt as an L-plan tower house in the early 15th century. Patrick Lyon, 9th Lord Glamis, carried out major works after 1606, and the present building is largely 17th century.
Inigo Jones is traditionally linked to the design, but Historic Scotland considers William Schaw more likely. The article does not use the term Scots baronial and gives no dimensions or materials.
The castle was listed Category A in 1987. Princess Margaret was born here in 1930. It is the home of the Earl of Strathmore and is open to the public, though the article gives no prices.
