The Jesuits bought the property in the 1580s for 45,000 ducats. It was a palace built in 1470 for Roberto Sanseverino, Prince of Salerno, and its facade survives as the front of the church, with rustic diamond-shaped stone projections. Giuseppe Valeriano built the church from 1584 to 1601. The article lists the style as Baroque.
The interior has frescoes by Belisario Corenzio and Paolo de Matteis, Francesco Solimena's Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple (1725) and Giovanni Lanfranco's Evangelists. The 1688 earthquake destroyed Lanfranco's dome decoration, and Paolo de Matteis repainted the dome.
The Jesuits were expelled in 1767 and again in 1848. The church holds the urn of Saint Joseph Moscati, who was canonized in 1987, and the burial place of the composer Carlo Gesualdo.
