Santiago Calatrava designed the station, proposed in 1994 as part of the Linha do Norte modernization, with a concept in 1995. Necso built it. It opened on May 19, 1998, as part of the Expo '98 celebrations, and won the Brunel Award on October 7, 1998. The article calls the style modernist with some Gothic influence, and says it resembles Calatrava's Allen Lambert Galleria in Toronto.

The station is raised 62 feet (19 m) above the roadway. It is reinforced concrete under a lattice of glass and metal. The article gives eight lines of 510 to 720 meters across 309-meter platforms, without explaining the difference.

It is an intermodal hub with regional and intercity trains, a metro station, a bus terminal, a shopping center and a police station. Infraestruturas de Portugal is listed as owner.
