Crown Prince Frederick IV asked his father, Christian V, for permission to build the summer palace. Construction began in 1699 and the original one-story building was probably designed by Ernst Brandenburger. Johan Conrad Ernst extended it in 1709 into a three-story H-shaped building, and Lauritz de Thurah added lateral wings around the courtyard from 1733 to 1738. The infobox gives completion in 1735. The style is Baroque.
The palace has stucco work, ceiling paintings and a marble bathroom. The garden was first Baroque, then redesigned as an English landscape garden from 1795. Restorations ran in 1927 to 1932 and 1993 to 1998.
The War Ministry took it over in 1868, and it has housed the Royal Danish Military Academy since 1869. The chapel has been the local parish church since 1932.
