Nicolai Eigtved designed the church, and King Frederick V laid the foundation stone on October 31, 1749. Eigtved died in 1754, Nicolas-Henri Jardin took over in 1756 with a more classical marble design, and work stopped in 1770. The church stood as a ruin until Carl Frederik Tietgen bought the site in 1874 and financed its completion.

Ferdinand Meldahl designed the final form, and it opened on August 19, 1894. Meldahl used limestone, not marble, because of financial limits. The dome spans 102 feet (31 m) on twelve columns, the largest church dome in Scandinavia. The infobox gives Rococo and the text calls the dome Roman Baroque.

It is a parish church of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Denmark. It hosts concerts and displays works by Bertel Thorvaldsen. The article gives no visiting details.
