Emperor Charles IV initiated the church, which stands on the site of Nuremberg's synagogue, demolished after the pogrom of 1349. It was begun in 1352, consecrated in 1358, and completed in 1361 by the infobox, while the text says construction continued into the 1360s. The article says Peter Parler probably designed it. The style is Gothic. The article gives no dimensions or structural materials. It is a hall church with two aisles, nine bays and four columns. Adam Kraft designed the west gable of 1506 to 1508.

The Männleinlaufen clock was installed from 1506 to 1509. The church became Lutheran in 1525, and a Catholic parish acquired it in 1810. Bombing in the Second World War nearly destroyed it, and repairs were done by 1953.

It is an active Catholic parish church.
