The present Gothic church was built in the 14th and 15th centuries on the foundation of an earlier Merovingian-era church, and the article names the stonemason and architect Madern Gerthener as designer. The infobox gives 1550 as completion. The earlier Salvator Basilica was founded on September 1, 852 by Louis the German. The Wahlkapelle on the south side of the choir was built in 1425 for imperial elections.

The article says it has never been a bishop's seat. The spire is 312 feet (95 m) high. It gives no building materials or nave dimensions. Nine bells were cast in 1877, and the largest, Gloriosa, weighs 11,950 kilograms (26,300 pounds).

A fire destroyed St. Bartholomew's in 1867, and it was rebuilt in its present style. The RAF raid of March 22, 1944 burned out the interior completely, and reconstruction came in the 1950s.
