The Lords of Mattersburg built the first part at the start of the 15th century. The Habsburgs owned the castle for about 170 years from around 1450 and changed it little. Nikolaus Esterházy received it in 1622, and refurbishment ran from 1630 to 1634. Domenico Carlone worked on it from 1643, with Italian construction workers. His son Paul extended it, and Ferdinand Mödlhammer enlarged it in the second half of the 18th century.

The keep is 160 feet (50 m) high, and the castle stands 1,677 feet (511 m) above sea level. Kaiserstein stone was used for the main portals and fountains. The article names no style beyond calling it late medieval.

The Esterházy family still owns it. It holds a treasure vault and a Wunderkammer.
