Isa-bey, named Isaković-Hranušić in the infobox, founded the original mosque around 1457 and dedicated it to Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror. That first mosque was wooden and much smaller, and it was destroyed by the end of the 15th century. The 1565 rebuild was dedicated to Suleiman the Magnificent. The article names no architect.

The article calls the style classical Ottoman and the mosque the largest single-dome mosque in the country. It has one dome, one minaret and room for 500 worshippers. Side rooms were added in 1800 and connected to the central prayer area in 1848. It gives no dimensions or building materials.

A graveyard beside it holds graves of viziers, imams, muftis and other notable Sarajevo residents. The mosque was damaged in the Second World War and mostly in the wars of the 1990s. Its painted interior was conserved from 1980 to 1983, and a renovation was completed in 2020.
