Construction of the Eliyahu Hanavi Synagogue in Alexandria began in 1836 with contributions from the Muhammad Ali dynasty, and Sir Moses Haim Montefiore assisted in completing it. It was finished in 1850. The article names no architect. A synagogue completed in 1354 had stood on the site, and the article says Napoleon's army bombed and destroyed it in 1798.

The style is Neoclassical, with Gothic Revival and Byzantine Revival influences, and the article gives Italian marble as the material. It holds 700 worshippers. It is an active synagogue of the Nusach Sefard rite, serving a very small community.

The synagogue closed for the 2012 High Holidays over security concerns and then fell into disrepair. Egypt announced a restoration project in 2017, and it was rededicated in January 2020.
