The infobox gives the founding as the 6th century BCE, and the article says the buildings may date from then. Legend ties the founding to the destruction of the Temple. The current building was constructed at the end of the 19th century on the site of an older one. The infobox gives the style as Moorish. The article names no architect.

The exterior is modest and the interior richly decorated with hand-painted ceramic tiles in green, yellow, blue, brown and white. It has two covered halls, unlike other Djerba synagogues, and loggias on columns around an inner courtyard. A third column on the east was never built, which local tradition links to the Temple's destruction.

It is an active synagogue serving about 1,300 Jews. It is part of a UNESCO site inscribed in 2023, and hosts an annual pilgrimage in Iyar.
