The North British Railway opened North Bridge station on June 22, 1846. Two rival stations opened on May 17, 1847, and between 1866 and 1868 the company acquired them, demolished all three and built the present Victorian station on the site. The article names no architect. A glass dome was added in 1897, and the North Bridge was rebuilt that year as a three-span iron and steel bridge on sandstone piers.

The station has 20 numbered platforms. A central island building is ringed by platforms on four sides, with bay platforms facing east and west. A roof replacement from 2010 to 2012 put strengthened clear glass over about 370,000 square feet (34,000 m²) and greatly increased the natural light.

It is a Category A listed building, designated on November 12, 1991. Network Rail owns it, and several train operators serve it.
