The 1667 earthquake destroyed the earlier cathedral, and the Republic of Ragusa relied on Italian architects and engineers for the rebuilding. The text traditionally attributes the design to Andrea Buffalini, working under Stjepan Gradić, while the infobox lists Bernini and Carlo Fontana, whom the text mentions only as stylistic references. Ilija Katičić completed the building.
Groundbreaking was in 1671, and it was completed in 1713 after about four decades of intermittent work. The infobox gives a cost of 100,000 ducats and a size of 135 by 56 feet (41 by 17 m). It is a Baroque three-aisled basilica with side chapels and a dome, and Corinthian columns on the facade.
The main altar has a Titian triptych, dated circa 1550 or 1552 in different passages. The 1979 Montenegro earthquake caused damage, and a shell struck it in 1991. It is part of a UNESCO site.
