Prince Konstantin Ostrogski founded Dubno Castle in 1492. It was rebuilt in stone in the early 16th century, and Prince Janusz Ostrogski carried out major renovations in the early 17th century, with Italian-style fortifications. The early 16th-century complex had a church, a two-story palace and 73 cannons.
Prince Stanisław Lubomirski commissioned a plain, rectangular two-story palace in the 1780s, designed by Henryk Ittar and Domenico Merlini. After the Lubomirskis sold the residence to Princess Boryatinsky, it was remodeled in 1871. The old barbican was converted into a prison in the 1920s.
A Russian siege in 1660 failed to take the castle. It is an Immovable Monument of National Significance of Ukraine.
