Duart Castle stands on the Isle of Mull, beside the Sound of Mull. The article says it was probably built by Clan MacDougall in the thirteenth century and appears to have passed to Clan MacLean in the following century. Donald Macdonald, Lord of the Isles, confirmed it to the Macleans by charter in 1390.

Royalist Clan MacLean troops defeated a Clan Campbell siege in 1647. Sir John Maclean surrendered the castle in 1691 to the 10th Earl of Argyll, who partly demolished it, and it was abandoned by 1751. It was sold in 1801 and kept as a ruin.

Sir Fitzroy Donald Maclean, 26th Chief of Clan MacLean, bought and restored it in 1911. It is the seat of Clan MacLean and a Category A listed building.
